the joke of the day….

February 24, 2009 2 comments

The joke of the day on campus — the oscars.

The real joke — slumdog.

It feels good to have Indians on stage and all, but there was way better performances from the Indians before and that even failed to win up on the foreign film category. Slumdog, I feel is an ok movie worth one watch — not life alteringly profound or anything. But the awards has had a sobering effect on some of the english-movie crazed crowd (like me), made us realize that there are far better (read profound etc.) movies in local indian languages abeit unrecognized (unawarded). Many, like me, have started hitting the indian DVDs from today. :P

Makes me wonder “Why did Slumdog Millionare end up with so many?” (There unfortunately is more options than a-d, so what do you think is the reason, comment up)

a) It was a ‘mind+body+soul’ blowingly great.

b) The director was WHITE.

c) The ratio of WHITE : every other color in the credits was high enough.

d) FOX bankrolled whoever it is to be bankrolled.

e) Americans love the quaint little porayal of india (should I hold up a sarcasm card).

f) God does play dice — the perversions of probability.

g) This is so irrational — looking for a reason is bound to fail.

h) This shallowness is all that is there in english movies — all of them lack the intensity of raw real life, but is rather filled with childish fairly tale dreams.

i) …. because it was all about hope — let people have that  dope, more so in the bleak economy.

j) None of the abobe (Did I miss something — enlighten me…)

(Written yesterday 23/02/09 after the oscar news overload)

P.S: I have a project seminar this week and I am so dead from all the slacking I did all this time.

I love reading xkcd. But I do not get a few of them. Maybe I am not geeky enough, or maybe he (the author)is not geeky enough (as in not as geeky as me).

P.S: Why I think that it is a he?… From the nature of the sleaze :P… you,… don’t make for your psych hat.

movie induced rants

I have seen Slumdog millionare (was late on caching up on that). I do not enjoy being on the bandwagon but this time I made an exception. I have been chaining up on movies. Hence not in the best of state to comment now (read low glucose levels in the brain after missing out food in the process).

Well back to slumdog. The ending was so cliché. I almost saw it coming.I do not want to comment on the India angle — there could be such an India out there (nobody, at least I, do not know for certain). About the negatives there are ‘n’ other indians blogging out there go read them. I liked one thing about the movie — the life shown as happening in between the questions on the show. Reminds me of a quote that I made around the time when I was facing the engineering entrance woes, I somehow remembered that when I saw the movie. (Maybe you’ll hate this but let me indulge myself).

Life is a series of tests with everything else fitted in between.

End slumdog.

Start on generic movies….

All the movies are so hanky-panky. A lot of time is spent at the begnning of the movie to show the shit that the heroe is in. Then starts the struggle and then the happy ending. Movies are like LSD for the human collective. The standard issue feel good formula — what crap.

But the real fun in life (according to me) is in the doing — in the struggle, even if I do not make it, in the risking, even if I fail gloriously in the end. I’d like a movie that shock me with that — with life, with the unexpected end (well there were a few malayalam movies of old that did that). But then once it comes and hits me, maybe I’ll hate it, but still I wish that there was a box office hit that’s a shocker. Most probably it will not be a hit — because people go to movie to escape into entertainment — sort of like getting high [citation needed]. But still one can wish.

I guess I am going into an anti-movie slump, too many DVD’s sometimes does that to me :P.

P.S: A project review is up this week, have work to do — maybe the slump is good for me :P.

who are you?

See the Venn Diagram and figure out who you are? — link

Me: I am all of them, depending on the time and place (I oscillate, pretty unstable at that). But the general statistical trend is to be a nerd….
